Abstract: Aiming at the technical problems in broaching process and machine design, the domestic and international research on dynamic analysis and optimization of broaching machines, simulation techniques of broaching process, quality evaluation of cutting surfaces, failure monitoring and lifespan prediction of broaching tools were summarized and analyzed. The importance of numerical simulation of broaching process and machine design was addressed. The prediction of manufacturing surface quality and tool damage based on signals of acoustic, vibration and cutting forces were discussed. The results indicate that with the development of new advanced materials and high requirement of broaching process, the static/dynamic analysis and finite element simulation of cutting process can improve the characteristics of broaching machine, shorten the design cycle and reduce design cost, which will perform more and more important in the development of future broaching machines. Additionally, due to the high cost of parts, the next generation of broaching machine is required to integrate with realtime monitoring systems for surface quality, hardness and tool failure detection, in order to avoid manufacturing defects on part caused by vibrations or tool failures.
