Abstract: Aiming at the difficulty of online measurement of surface roughness of hole parts in abrasive flow finishing, acoustic emission detection technology was applied to abrasive flow machining. The source and characteristics of AE signal in abrasive flow processing were studied. The curve of waveform characteristic parameters varying with processing time was obtained by parameter analysis method, and the relationship between the energy and the number of rings of AE signal and the surface roughness of parts was established.According to the constitutive equation of power-rate fluid, the wall slip velocity was calculated, and the influence of wall slip velocity on AE signal was analyzed. The results indicate that the energy and ringing count of AE signal reduces with the increase of surface roughness, and the change rule of them is basically same with that of surface roughness. The surface roughness is the main reason for the change of AE signal. As the surface roughnessdecreases, the intensity of AE signal reduces even if the wall slip velocity is increased.Acoustic emission can be used for on-line surface roughness measurement of abrasive flow machining holes.
Key words: abrasive flow machining(AFM); acoustic emission(AE)detection; surface roughness; wall slip velocity; hole parts; intensity of AE signal
